On March 24, 2012, Billy and Jeanean Willard met with Gary, an eyewitness of a recent Bigfoot sighting in Chilhowie, VA. Gary took us to the site of his encounter within the mountains of Chilhowie. The area is very quiet and peaceful, no houses within miles of the location and is in among National Forest. Gary saw the creature upon a hill near a powerline pole within a powerline easement. He has no doubt's about what he saw. Gary's account of his sighting can be seen in the sighting database in the "Smyth County" section. His brother also had an encounter with "something" on the same day in the same area. During the investigation, some hair was discovered on the pole in the powerline easement. Some of the hair was collected and placed in a container. A staff member of Sasquatch Watch of Virginia will examine the hair to make sure if it is from a known animal. The hair is a reddish-brown color and some strands of it were about 3 inches long. After speaking with Gary at some length, I am convinced he saw something very unusual that evening. Gary has joined on as a member of Sasquatch Watch of Virginia to continue to research and investigate this mystery.
I arrived around 4pm and met up with SWVA member Brandon and his friend B. We went to the field where Brandon has had most of his encounters and he showed me the locations. The field is roughly an acre and is overgrown with high grass. The ground is slightly hilly and is bordered on two sides by woods and the other
two sides by roads. There is a trail along the woods that had various tracks of people, horses, deer and a vehicle, probably an atv.
We entered the woods and wandered about for a bit. The ground slopes down into a hollow. It was fairly quiet in the woods. There was a good amount of noise from nearby, including a gun range and I85 traffic, but there was little animal noise.
Down by the road we found a partial deer carcass. One of the deer forelegs was cleanly broken off. There was still a good amount of skin left on the deer but the organs and muscle were completely gone.
The road that Brandon has had several sightings has many abandoned houses and barns along it. The road
runs parallel to I85 for several miles and there is a 4 foot barbed wire fence running along the side of the road. During one sighting of a 10-12 foot tall creature that was standing behind a highway sign, Brandon saw the creature step toward the fence and lost sight of it as it went into the forest. That area probably has virtually no human intrusion and would be a great habitat for bf. We saw several good sized trails going through that area. Also the area next to I85 has several lakes that are hidden in the woods.
There is an old train track that has been converted to a gravel trail that leads to a railroad bridge over Lake Gaston. Brandon told me the trail runs from Fredericksburg to North Carolina. One night while Brandon was walking with his cousin on the trail, they heard something following them on the trail that would jump into the bushes whenever they shined a light towards it. Then something started to throw rocks at them.
The trail was an eerie place and very quiet. It runs
along the same patch of woods that is near the field where B. has had his sightings. We sat there for a little while in the car but it was pretty quiet. Going the opposite way from the way we drove is fairly clear but not drivable and the trail goes into a good-sized wood.
We then returned to the field and walked around some. Brandon made some grunts and wood knocks. We also
tried throwing some rocks into the woods. There was no response to any of this.
In conclusion, I feel that this area has good potential for bf habitat. The railroad trail might be a bf highway with little human traffic that would facilitate movement for reveal hundred miles.
Pete Wilson, Brandon Snellings and I investigated an area near Monterey, VA over the past weekend. We met in a local diner for breakfast and then headed out to search the area near Monterey, VA on Saturday. The area is beautiful with a lot of mountain views. We drove around the area before deciding upon a location to set up for some night operations within National Forest land. We employed several experiments to try and entice a response. A few different audio vocalizations were broadcasted and wood knocks were done. The area was VERY, VERY quiet. There were no responses, not even from known wildlife or other animals. As we were leaving the area, we stopped in different areas along the way out to try woodknocks and vocals. No responses. Very quiet. It wasn't until the end of our night operation that we finally got a response from an owl. In summary, no activity to report but the area appears to be prime location for our hairy friend.
Sasquatch Watch investigators will be investigating a recent sighting location on Saturday January 14, 2012. Investigators will include Billy Willard, Pete Wilson and Brandon Snellings. Please check back here for updates soon!
We would like to announce that we will soon have regular updates on what our investigators and researchers are doing in the field! Not only do our members get together for group expeditions, but most of our members do their own research as well. This blog has been designed to allow our members to document their activities and to allow the public to see what we are up to. So...stay tuned for our updates and thanks so much for reading!
